Airbnb Photo Requirements and Best Practices
Airbnb's photo requirements are short — get the resolution right, shoot landscape, show every room — but the listings that win the click are the ones that apply them well. Here is what matters, and why.
What Airbnb actually requires
These are the hard rules from Airbnb's own help centre — everything else in this guide is about doing them well.

Airbnb also asks hosts to keep photos free of text overlays, contact details and promotional content — your photos are there to describe your space, not to advertise off the platform. Resolution, in plain language
1024 × 683 pixels is roughly one megapixel — almost any phone or camera from the last decade clears it. The requirement exists because travel platforms resize photos for every screen, and a small original turns soft the moment it is enlarged. A 3000-pixel-wide photo of the same shot will look crisp on a laptop, a phone and a television.
Two practical consequences:
- Shoot originals, not screenshots. A screenshot of a photo is small and compressed, and nothing can recover the detail.
- Prefer uploading your own files over importing compressed copies. If you pull photos back from a listing platform, they arrive compressed; the original on your phone is always the better source for a fresh upload.
How many photos should a listing have?
Airbnb requires a photo for every room and space; beyond that, the best listings run somewhere between twenty and thirty photos, and it is worth knowing why that range works. The first handful carry almost all the decision weight — guests click before they scroll — while the rest complete the story: every bedroom, the bathroom, amenities, the view, the details that separate your place from a hotel room.
Three rules keep the count useful rather than heavy:
- Never repeat a photo. A near-duplicate of the living room adds nothing and pushes the useful photos further down.
- Cut anything that apologises — the dim corner, the cluttered desk, the photo you took while something was being fixed.
- Keep the set current. Replace rather than accumulate when furniture changes or a season passes.
The order that wins clicks
Your first photo is a thumbnail in a searchable wall of listings; the second one has to hold the attention the first one earned.
- Hero shot: your most impressive wide space in its best light — usually the living area or the view.
- Then the stay: living, kitchen, and the primary bedroom, so guests picture themselves there early.
- Then completeness: remaining bedrooms and bathrooms — guests count them.
- Then lifestyle: balcony, pool, barbecue, workspace, at their best light.
- Then details: coffee corner, towels, fireplace, the small scenes that make your place memorable.

Getting photos that clear the bar
Meeting the technical requirements is the easy half. The listings that pull ahead have even light, straight lines and consistent colour across every photo — the qualities guests read as “professional” without ever naming them. That consistency is hard to fake with filters and easy to reach with two things:

What is the minimum photo size for Airbnb?

How many photos can I upload to my listing?
Airbnb accepts far more photos than you should use. The practical ceiling is the number you can keep excellent — usually twenty to thirty for a whole home.
Can I use the same photos on Booking.com and my own website?
