How Much Does an Airbnb Photographer Cost? Your Options Compared

Professional photos are one of the best investments a listing can get — but \u201chire a photographer\u201d is only one of three routes, and for many hosts it is not the best one. Here is what each option really costs you, in money and in time.

The three ways to get listing photos

  1. Airbnb's Professional Photography program — freelance photographers coordinated by Airbnb, available in many cities. You request a quote and the cost is deducted from a future payout.
  2. An independent photographer — you find, book and pay them directly; you own the arrangements and usually the files.
  3. Your phone, plus consistent enhancement — you shoot with the phone you already carry and let Superphoto apply the professional corrections afterwards, for a small per-photo cost and no scheduling at all.

What professional photography actually costs

Through Airbnb's program, pricing is quoted per property: you email their team with your listing links and receive a quote within about 72 hours, and the cost of the shoot is deducted from the next payout you receive. The program includes 2–3 images per room, professionally edited, uploaded to your listing about a week after the shoot — and it is limited to one shoot per listing, which is not refundable once underway. Airbnb occasionally extends invitation-only offers of free photography; those cannot be requested.

Independent photographers are booked and priced directly, and rates vary widely with market, property size and usage rights — commonly a few hundred dollars or euros for a full property session, and more for premium markets and larger homes. What you receive is typically a set of edited images within days to weeks, with reshoots and updates negotiated separately.

Whichever route you take, you are paying for three things: someone's time on site, professional editing, and the expertise of knowing what to shoot and how to shoot it. Only the first two are things a photographer can do that you cannot do yourself — the third you can learn, and this site's phone photography guide is exactly that lesson.

What the DIY route really requires

Shooting listing photos with a phone works when three conditions are met:

  • The photos are captured properly — daylight, level camera, tidy rooms, the room-by-room routine. That is a two-hour afternoon once you know the method.
  • The whole set is corrected consistently — even light, straight lines, one colour standard across every photo. This is the part people underestimate; a bright living room next to a yellow-tinted bedroom makes a home look worse than either photo alone.
  • Every room is covered — including the small and awkward ones.

The first and third conditions are yours to control with an afternoon of effort. The second is what Superphoto is for: your originals are enhanced in one run to the same professional standard, so the gallery reads as one coherent set rather than a collection of snapshots.

Airbnb's own research — over 14,700 listings — found that listings using professional photography saw a 19% average uplift in bookings over the following year. That 19% is the argument for great photos; it is not an argument for any specific way of getting them.

When to hire a professional

  • An exceptional property where architecture is the selling point.
  • You want a photoshoot to produce additional marketing material — magazines, a sales listing, a website.
  • You simply do not want to be involved in the process at all.

When to shoot it yourself

  • Your photos are good but dark, dull or inconsistent — the most common and most fixable situation.
  • You are refreshing a listing seasonally or after small changes.
  • No photographer is available in your area or within your budget.
  • You want full control over when your gallery updates.

There is also no rule against combining both: many hosts shoot their own photos to keep the gallery current year-round, and book a photographer for a full refresh every couple of years.

Upload a room, compare the enhanced result with the original, and decide with your own eyes before paying anything.
